Undercurrent 2025

Undercurrent is a follow-up to my 2023 exhibition, Masculine Sensibilities. In the aftermath of my solo exhibition, I became frustrated with my practice. I was tired of painting from life and photographs. The need to work more freely and intuitively grew stronger.

These paintings were created from memory and imagination. I wanted to capture the strength of an image derived from an emotional perspective rather than an objective one. I had no concrete plan to work with; instead, I prioritised experimentation and curiosity in order to allow my practice to develop organically. This was the feeling I was searching for — the freedom to allow paintings to emerge gradually and with intensity.

Strong, moody colours and atmospheric contrasts were visual aspects I revisited. I wanted to find balance and movement within the chaos of an emerging image. Male figures, like my previous body of work, remained the core subjects. Throughout the process, I noticed I was frequently returning to themes of loneliness and conflict; this new emotional visual language allowed me to explore the tension and frustrations of masculinity.

I was determined to avoid literal depictions and to move away from my academic training. At the same time, I tried to prevent falling into total abstraction and chaos. It was important that at least some degree of recognition remained.

My artistic vision has evolved. I want to create paintings that are intense and hold attention for myself and the viewer — to capture a sense of vulnerability and authenticity that only paint can achieve.
